The 4th annual Southern 6 Trail Race and Kid K, held on Sunday, February 19 on the Biology trail system at Southern Adventist University, marks the beginning of the 2012 Salomon Rock/Creek race series. Cold rain greeted the record number of nearly 200 runners who appeared to be completely unconcerned about the weather. For the second year in a row both the top guy, Jacob Bradley and top gal Kimberly Humphries, reigned as overall winners and set the bar high for next year. Not only that, but they both improved their time from last year. ”It was hard to believe my eyes as I watched the die hard trail runners fight the slick and muddy trails, returning to the finish line completely bathed in mud,” said Tyler Morgan, student at Southern. He went on to say that the only thing more unbelievable was the Kid K, where 33 young people ages 3-12 ran the 1.2 K trail designed for the first time on the same trail system as the 6K. Rock Creek provided youth sized jackets to the top winners of the Kid K, which did create a bit of competition to those who came in 14th who felt they also deserved such an esteemed prize. Randy Whorton, Director of Wild Trails commented that this event is truly designed for families so that young people can grow in their running. “We are so thankful to everyone that came out to run, volunteer, cheer and sponsor on behalf of the Outdoor Leadership department and maintenance of our trails,” said Joy McKee, Corporate Foundation Relations at Southern Adventist University. Mark your calendars, next years race will be held February 24, 2013.

There is a nice article in the Times-Free Press today, by Ron Bush, about Wild Trails volunteers helping to clear the damage from the original April 27th tornado as well as the subsequent storms.
